*Diamonds are found on every Continent in the World, but Pretty Diamonds are only found on a select few.
*Of all diamonds mined, only a quarter mined are of gem quality.
*Miners have to remove and sort 250 tons of Kimberlite to find a large enough piece of Diamond Rough to cut a 1 Carat Diamond and that’s probably not even a pretty diamond. Only about 5% of the Diamonds found are pretty enough that they should be used in Jewelry.
*Diamonds are the purest form of Carbon Crystal.
*The name Diamond comes from a Greek word “Adamas” meaning Unconquerable.
*The agreed approximate weight of 1 Carat (the unit used to measure Diamond weight) is 200 milligrams / 0.200 grams.
*“Karat” and “Carat” are not the same thing. “Carat” (CT) is a unit used to measure Diamond Weight, and “Karat” (KT) is used when describing the percent of Gold a Gold mixture (i.e. 10KT, 14KT, 18KT, & 24KT).
*Diamonds are found in the earth layer known as Kimberlite.
*All Natural Diamonds are about the same age, which is approximately Three and a Half Billion Years old.
*Did you know all Gold Starts as Yellow Gold? It’s True! Pure Gold, meaning just gold; no alloys added, is Yellow. It’s also really soft!
*Black Opals (currently one of the most sought after Opals) were once regarded as the leftover (garbage) Opals.
*Opals can consist of up to 30% water.
*Sapphires come in all the colors of the Rainbow (except Red; that is a Ruby). The different minerals in the ground that Sapphires are formed in decide what color they are going to be. Sapphires are found on just about every Continent, so there, is a wide variety of minerals.
*Ruby is named after its red color deriving from the Latin word “Rubeus”.
*Sapphire is also named after it's blue color deriving from the Greek word "Sappherios".
*Tungsten Carbide is Corundum, which is also what Sapphires and Rubies are made of.
*Palladium is in the Platinum Family.
*Alexandrite can appear to be green in the daylight and turns a light red in artificial light.
*The name Emerald derives from the Greek word "Smaraydos"; meaning Green Stone.
*The color of “some gemstones” may be altered by time. Kunzite can turn into a pale or even clear color when exposed to direct sunlight.
